Only in first grade...

  • can you be greeted with, "you look pretty today Mrs. Thompson!"
  • can your 45 minute math lesson be interrupted 3 (YES, THREE) times because teeth have fallen out!
  • can you restructure your day to write a story about "The huge lizard that snuck in to room 10."  Seriously!
  • can you go through an entire stash of bandaids in one day!
  • Can you applaud and cheer a brand new reader!

It was a good day, I'd say.  I think they would too.

Settlers of Catan

My good friend Jenny (hi, Jenny) read about some references that I've made to Catan, and asked what it was.  So, here's the scoop for any inquiring minds.

MFG3061 Settlers of Catan is a board game.  Not at all to be confused with a bored game.  We were introduced to it by our friend Tom Mays.  Settlers of Catan is a trading and building game set in the mythical world of Catan. Players roll dice to determine which resources are generated each round and then must strategically trade those resources with other players to get what they need to build their settlements, cities, and roads. With multiple ways to gain victory points and a board that changes in every play, Settlers of Catan is a game that can be played hundreds of different ways.

I bought it for Miles for Christmas last year and it's one of our favorite ways to spend time as a family or with friends!  If you want to try it out, we are always up for a game!

FYI~You can't buy this just anywhere.  You need to go to a specific game store or order it online.

Let me know if you are already a fan.

In desperation

In desperation for any semblance of fall, I purchased these

Ugh!  I love thought I loved all things pumpkin spice, but let me save you a few bucks and your curiosity, PASS!  Blahch!

Today was a good day

Smiley I've had a sore throat and have been tired and achy for about two weeks now.  However, today I feel ooogles better!  I'm so thankful and hope to continue on this upward trend of good health.

In addition to feeling better, I was blessed with good fortune at Starbucks.  You see, I hardly ever stop at Starbucks, but this morning traffic was extremely light (another blessing) and I made it to work in record time.  So... I decided to stop off for a warm beverage to soothe my throat and a breakfast sandwich to accompany my prescription.  I anticipated using a gift card, but was reminded upon my arrival that Teacher's get a free coffee on Mondays in September and that today was the last day for Starbucks' ham breakfast sandwiches because they are discontinuing them, so they told me that there was no charge!  No charge?!  That was one heck of a way to start off my Monday!  Free coffee and Breakfast ~ Thanks Starbucks!

This essentially the most intense game of Monopoly that I have ever

Another September Birthday...

How could I forget to include Johnny in my last post.  Johnny Appleseed, that is.  I celebrated his birthday yesterday with my class.  These kinds of fun things make me so happy to be back with the first graders.  My fourth graders were never excited about Johnny Appleseed, like these guys were.

First grade 08-09 035 Aren't they so stinkin' cute?!

Happy Birthday

September is a big birthday month in our family.  So here are the birthday shout outs, that are much overdue.

not enough time in the day

I stayed home from work yesterday and today.  I woke up Monday morning with pink eye and a relatively minor sore throat.  Lovely huh?  Not sure where I picked up the pink eye, but so far... so good, I've kept my germs to myself!  Being home with pink eye is kind of a good thing.  You aren't really sick, so you're not in bed, or chained to the bathroom.  I got a lot done, but not as much as I wanted to.  I rested and took care of several things that I just haven't been able to do because of work.  I don't know how to fit it all in normally.  Even staying home from work "sick", there still isn't enough time in the day.

That's why there has been a shortage of updates and posts on this blog.  So I ask my 4 loyal readers... Be patient and don't give up on me.  The tide eventually shifts.

I understand now.

Twilight A while back I was browsing the flair buttons on Facebook, amidst all the Jonas Brothers love, I kept seeing these buttons that said "I love Edward Cullen".  I asked Miles if that was one of the Jonas Brothers or something.  I was feeling old and so out of the 'know', on what some of these pop culture references were.

Shortly thereafter, my Mom and sisters started blabbering on and on about this series of books by Stephanie Meyer.  They were vampire books, so I didn't listen much.  I'm not at all a fan of dark, scary stuff, so I was not all interested.  Eventually, they talked me into it, insisting that is wasn't any more scary than Harry Potter, which I loved.  After all, it is a young adult book.

Last weekend I took the book and now I understand what they were talking about.  Oh boy do I understand!  Not only do I know who Edward Cullen is, but I will so put the button that says I love him on my facebook page!

Oh Edward.  Oh, vampire love!  Sigh.

Saturday night fun!

Fall
I am so relieved for that the weather is cooler and things are getting fall-ish!

I'd like to thank the academy

Recently my funniest friend Supermommy awarded me my first blog award.  It's prestigious I assure you!

The Oops award was created and is to be given to bloggers who inspire others with their humor and their talents, also for contributing to the blogging world in whatever medium. When you receive this award it is considered a “special honor”. Once you have received this award, you are to pass it on to others.”

The rules for passing this honor on:

1) Pick 5 blogs that you would like to award this honor to. 2) Each award has to have the name of the author and also a link to his or her blog to be visited by everyone. 3) Each award winner has to show the award and put the name and link to the blog that has given her or him the award itself. 4) Award-winner and the one who has given the prize have to show the link of “Oops” blog, so everyone will know the origin of this award.

I'd like to give the award to-

Melissa Jean the Blogging Queen - my youngest sister who is looking for a marketing job.  Help a sista out and give her a lead!

All you Need is LOVE - My friend from the South with a mouth like a sailor!  But, all you need is love so it doesn't really matter!

MannOhMann - she has the biggest vocabulary that I know!  She cracks me up.

Red Patent Leather High Heels - This girl loves Justin Timberlake and is bringing sexy back while dancing in her red patent leather high heels!

My view from the other side of the hill - her posts often have funny stories about my kids, so of course she deserves an award!

I am honored to have received this honor from Aracely, who is clearly the BEST blogger I follow.  Funny, consistant, brilliantly written, and did I mention funny!?!  She makes the English teachers of Colton School District appear to have done their job back in the day! This girl can write!

Pizazz

I'm of the 'less is more' camp.  My daughter however, doesn't belong to the same camp.  Tonight we were working on her all about me poster for homework.  I kept saying, "don't you think that's enough, Hannah?"  Of course, I was met with resistance.  She said, "No Mom, it needs more.... Pizazz!"

Pizazz huh?  That my friends, is something that I apparently lack.  Hannah on the other hand, lacks no Pizazz!
